One Minute Power Tip:

Positive Attitude

Churchill said, “The optimist sees opportunities in every danger while the pessimist sees danger in every opportunity!”

This Christmas decide to look at life from another perspective, a positive perspective. You cannot choose what happens to you or what happens around you, but you can choose what happens in you!

Choose to have a positive attitude!

Attitude is 10% what happens to you and 90% what you do about what happens to you!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Self Improvement &
Personal Development Tips
for your Happiness & Wellbeing:

Start enjoying the Christmas rituals this year and create your own family traditions

I love Christmas time - not because it's a religious holiday - but because it is so wonderfully festive with decorations EVERYWHERE you go, people trying to be nice to each other, tons of gifts and of course, the gorgeous Christmas trees to delight us all.

We love these things because they are rituals that remind us of our essential goodness. Christmas may commemorate the birth of Christ, but it has a longstanding tradition that has nothing directly to do with that.

It's about celebrating our blessings. Jews and Muslims and Buddhists and even atheists have a right to do that. Let's let them into the Christmas game.

Let's end this silly bickering, this absurd and illogical political correctness about "Christ-mas" as if it was a multi-cultural "crime", including banning Christmas trees from public view, and instead just include all our friends and neighbours in our annual celebrations of GRATITUDE!

Christmas is about love and sharing. And the fun of it is in the rituals we observe to experience that love.

We use rituals to convey beliefs, ideas, and feelings from one generation to another. Rituals needn't be ancient to work. And you don't have to be among the chosen few to enjoy them.

Start enjoying the Christmas rituals this year. Or you can create your own. Here are some ideas:

Make cookies in Christmas shapes - wreaths, angels, Santa Clauses, Christmas trees - and use them as ornaments for your tree. Make some gifts a tradition. You might, for example, get your wife a new pair of earrings every year or add to your son's collection of sports memorabilia.

Take a family walk around the neighborhood to look at Christmas decorations.

Reserve a special activity for Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. Maybe take a plate of homemade candies to several close friends, or settle down after dinner to read aloud from Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" (get your free copy download at the bottom of this message!)

Take secret snapshots of family members or friends throughout the year, and then present the photos on Christmas in an album or special frame.

Start a "white elephant" tradition, exchanging last year's worst gifts with friends and family.

Smear pinecones with peanut butter and birdseed and hang them on your trees and bushes. Especially do this if you live with a White Christmas, as the wildlife need the extra nutrition in their winter scarcity.

Make it a tradition to prepare a certain food or beverage together and serve it every year while opening your gifts: mulled wine or cider, eggnog, caramel corn, or roasted chestnuts, for example.

Write a note to yourself and stow it in your stocking for next year.

If you'd like to add some international flair to your holiday celebration, try these Christmas traditions from around the world:

Make - and break - a traditional Mexican pinata. You can create your own or buy one. Then fill it with candy and coins. Children will love hitting it until it breaks and spills its treasure.

Use Christmas to honor family - both living and departed. In Finland, people make Christmas Eve visits to the gravesites of their loved ones. They light candles on the graves at dusk, then gather together for a big family meal. After dinner, Father Christmas makes an appearance, bringing presents for all the children.

Instead of hanging stockings on the mantle, set out your shoes. This tradition started in Italy, where La Befana (the female version of Santa Claus) fills the children's shoes with toys, candy, and fruit.

Participate in the Swedish St. Lucia candlelit parade.... find out more about international traditions and adopt one for your family to share each year as part of YOUR FAMILY traditions for the Holiday Season and New Year time of Celebration.

GIFTS FOR MEN

Here are some gift ideas for those special men in your life!

Buying gifts for men is not nearly as complicated as it is for women. Follow these rules and you should have no problems.

Rule #1: When in doubt - buy him a cordless drill. It does not matter if he already has one. I have a friend who owns 17 and he has yet to complain. As a man, you can never have too many cordless drills. No one knows why.

Rule #2: If you cannot afford a cordless drill, buy him anything with the word ratchet or socket in it. Men love saying those two words. "Hey George, can I borrow your ratchet?" "OK. Bye-the- way, are you through with my 3/8-inch socket yet?" Again, no one knows why.

Rule #3: If you are really, really broke, buy him anything for his car. A 99-cent ice scraper, a small bottle of deicer or something to hang from his rear view mirror. Men love gifts for their cars. No one knows why.

Rule #4: Do not buy men socks. Do not buy men ties. And never buy men bathrobes. I was told that if God had wanted men to wear bathrobes, he wouldn't have invented Jockey shorts.

Rule #5: You can buy men new remote controls to replace the ones they have worn out. If you have a lot of money buy your man a big- screen TV with the little picture in the corner. Watch him go wild as he flips, and flips, and flips.

Rule #6: Do not buy a man any of those fancy liqueurs. If you do, it will sit in a cupboard for 23 years. Real men drink whiskey or beer.

Rule #7: Do not buy any man industrial-sized canisters of after- shave or deodorant. I'm told they do not stink - they are earthy.

Rule #8: Buy men label makers. Almost as good as cordless drills. Within a couple of weeks there will be labels absolutely everywhere. "Socks. Shorts. Cups. Saucers. Door. Lock. Sink." You get the idea. No one knows why.

Rule #9: Never buy a man anything that says "some assembly required" on the box. It will ruin his Special Day and he will always have parts left over.

Rule #10: Good places to shop for men include Northwest Iron Works, Parr Lumber, Home Depot, John Deere, Valley RV Center, and Les Schwab Tire. (NAPA Auto Parts and Sears Clearance Centers are also excellent men's stores. It doesn't matter if he doesn't know what it is. "From NAPA Auto, eh? Must be something I need. Hey! Isn't this a starter for a '68 Ford Fairlane? Wow! Thanks.")

Rule #11: Men enjoy danger. That's why they never cook - but they will barbecue. Get him a monster barbecue with a 100-pound propane tank. Tell him the gas line leaks. "Oh the thrill! The challenge! Who wants a hamburger?"

Rule #12: Tickets to a football game are a smart gift. However, he will not appreciate tickets to "A Retrospective of 19th Century Quilts." everyone knows why.

Rule #13: Men love chainsaws. Never, ever, buy a man you love a chainsaw. If you don't know why - please refer to Rule #8 and what happens when he gets a label maker.

Rule #14: It's hard to beat a really good wheelbarrow or an aluminum extension ladder. Never buy a real man a stepladder. It must be an extension ladder. No one knows why.

Rule #15: Rope. Men love rope. It takes us back to our cowboy origins, or at least The Boy Scouts. Nothing says love like a hundred feet of 3/8" manila rope. No one knows why.
